"VOLLEYBALL FOR PRIMARY AND INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL KIDS IS COMING SOON! "

"MiniVolleyball" is a Waikato Regional Volleyball campaign aimed at 8 - 13* year old school children. This project is a collaborative between SportsForce, Waikato Regional Volleyball Association (WRVA) and Volleyball New Zealand (VNZ) who are all committed to growing the sport of volleyball within Waikato, King Country and Thames Valley schools. This promotion not only benefits the sport of volleyball but also meets community goals of getting kids healthy and active at a young age in a safe non-contact family based environment.
*If your children are outside this category, then please still contact us!

What is MiniVolleyball?

MiniVolleyball was developed to make the sport of volleyball more accessible to children, by simplifying the game to better suit children of all skill levels. The result is a simpler game, played on a smaller court, with a softer ball, allowing children more opportunities to develop the skills necessary to excel at volleyball. The concept of mini-volleyball revolves around "Keeping Children Active". Mini Volleyball is played on a badminton sized court with four players per side. It can be played inside or outside depending on venue restrictions. Although the score is kept, the emphasis is more on participation and motor skill development rather than winning.

What are the benefits of Mini Volleyball?

·                     Ability to engage a wider sector of education with a positive non-contact product

·                     Increase strength of special interest volleyball schools through bringing players with 100+ games experience to secondary school programmes

·                     Expose the sport to families as many parents will come to watch participants play

·                     Developed coaching resources available to the primary & intermediate education sector

·                     The majority of players will develop skills that will benefit them when they play in the secondary school competitions

Introducing Mini Volleyball Programme

We are looking to provide clinics to schools offering the opportunity for children to experience the fundamental basics of volleyball and subsequently gain an understanding of the game, its rules and the technical aspects of this fast paced and enjoyable sport. The opportunities that the Introducing Mini Volleyball Programme provide children an introduction to volleyball and then possibly progress them to compete as a team against other schools; develop ongoing skills in the sport of Mini-Volleyball; develop fair-play qualities; and much, much more. Mini-Volleyball provides an active edge and physical activity for children, which should be encouraged at a young age

Parental Involvement

·                     It is fun as participants are always involved in the match

·                     30 minute matches are an advantage as it is a minimal time commitment

·                     Held in 1 location so once transport is initially organised it is set for the whole season, unlike other sports that operate home and away style competitions

·                     Rules supporting participation mean everyone gets a fair go

·                     Opportunity to rotate players - it removes the need to make substitutions and therefore judgements about court time for players

·                     Boys and girls can play in the same team

·                     No special equipment/clothing is required

·                     It is a sport that can be taken home and played as a family promoting healthy lifestyles

·                     At this level It is an easily coached and officiated sport so any parent can get involved with little to no volleyball experience

Equipment

·                     The official court is a badminton doubles court ( 13.4m x 6.1m). This can be marked by badminton court       outlines in an indoor setting, by rope outlines outdoors or even using cones to mark outline corners.

·                     The standard net height it two meters. In some cases this can even be a rope system if budget restraints exist.

·                     Softer balls are available ranging in price from $8.50 - $29.95 each.

Refereeing

A referee will officiate each game to control the game. Although leniency can be shown with regards to contact of the ball (to keep the game flowing), safety is always paramount. A full refereeing MINIVOLLEY guideline will be given to each team.

Want to become a coach?

We are always looking to recruit, train and hold volunteers within the sport. Without volunteers, teachers and parents getting involved there is no sport and it is the kids that suffer. Within our coaching development programme there will be coaching courses and resources promoted and made available to all involved.

Want to get involved in starting a league?

If you would like to get involved or you feel that your school or community has the facilities to hold a league or tournament, please contact us. Remembering that volleyball at this level can be played indoors, on grass or on sand. Equipment such as net systems and balls may be able to be provided.
